We are pleased to report that UTAM has received high scores – our strongest yet – in the PRI’s annual assessment of our responsible investing approach. We received A+ marks in all six categories that the PRI evaluated, scoring above the median in each.
The assessment reports and summary scorecard covering our management of the University of Toronto’s Pension and Endowment assets are available below (the summary scores for the two portfolios are identical, given that we manage both portfolios in the same manner). We have also included the full transparency report (the “private RI report”), which shows all of our responses to the PRI Reporting Framework.
“The PRI is the pre-eminent responsible investing organization in the world, and we are pleased to once again receive excellent scores from its assessment process,” says Daren Smith, UTAM’s President and Chief Investment Officer. “Our goal has been to develop a comprehensive, best-in-class RI program that applies to all asset classes, and we believe our PRI scores are a strong indication that we are on the right track.”
UTAM became a signatory to the United Nations–supported Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) in 2016. We have committed to following the PRI’s six responsible investing principles, which are an important component of our overall responsible investing framework.
About the PRI
The PRI is the world’s leading proponent of responsible investment, with over 3,200 signatories around the world. As the organization explains on its website, it “works to understand the investment implications of environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors and to support its international network of investor signatories in incorporating these factors into their investment and ownership decisions. The PRI acts in the long-term interests of its signatories, of the financial markets and economies in which they operate and ultimately of the environment and society as a whole. The PRI is truly independent. It encourages investors to use responsible investment to enhance returns and better manage risks, but does not operate for its own profit; it engages with global policymakers but is not associated with any government; it is supported by, but not part of, the United Nations.”
